Description:

During a journey through the Kansai region, while visiting sake breweries for a project with Emishiki, there was one thing I kept noticing everywhere a round ball of cedar leaves hanging at the entrance of each brewery, known as Sugidama.
What fascinates me most is the meaning behind it. When sake brewers craft fermentation barrels from sugi cedar, they use the leftover branches and leaves to form this ball. When it is first hung, the Sugidama appears in a vibrant green, releasing a bright, aromatic scent of fresh cedar, signaling the beginning of a new brewing season.
As time passes, the leaves slowly dry and turn into a deep brown. And when that transformation is complete, it marks that the sake has fully matured and is ready.
Along with this shift in color, the scent evolves as well. The crisp, green cedar softens into something warmer and more rounded, gently blending with the faint, mellow aroma of sake that lingers in the air around the brewery.
I was so captivated by this scent that I sought out the same sugi wood used for real sake barrels and brought it back home.
And that is how this fragrance was born a scent of wood shaped by time, infused with the quiet craftsmanship and spirit of Japan.
